I’m Neil Hoerstman, an architect based in Indianapolis with a focus on new residential construction, residential renovations, and small-scale commercial projects throughout Indiana and Michigan.

Good projects start with clear plans

Designing a new home or renovating an existing building is exciting — but for most people it's unfamiliar territory. You're making major decisions about budget, layout, and choosing a builder, often without having gone through the process before. Many owners worry about making an expensive mistake or starting construction without fully understanding what they're getting.

My job is to bring clarity before construction begins. Through the design process, we turn ideas into clear plans so you can understand your project, make confident decisions, and stay aligned with your budget. When these things are resolved early, the entire project runs smoother.

I work with homeowners and small business owners throughout Indiana and Michigan to create plans that are realistic to build and designed around how you live and work.

What working together is meant to solve

Most of my clients have never built or renovated before, and the same concerns come up in almost every first conversation:

"I don't know if my budget is realistic." "When should I bring a contractor into this?" "I don't really understand what I'm looking at in the drawings."

Good architecture isn't just the final look of the building — it's reducing uncertainty before construction starts. The drawings should help you understand your project, not confuse you. The design should support your daily routines, work, hobbies, and lifestyle, not fight them. And you should feel confident about decisions before committing to construction.

Why I practice this way

I grew up working in my family's construction company and spent years on job sites alongside carpenters and tradespeople before starting my architecture practice. I'm a licensed architect in Indiana, Michigan, Florida, and Colorado, with more than a decade of experience in commercial and residential new construction and renovations.

Because I've seen projects from the construction side, I think about design in terms of how a building gets built, not just how it looks. My goal is to create drawings that are clear to both you and your builder. When plans leave too much open to interpretation, owners end up making decisions during construction — when changes are expensive and stressful. I work to resolve those questions during design instead, so the builder can focus on building and you're not left translating between the drawings and the construction team.

After years in the field, I've found that the most successful projects aren't the most complex. They're the ones where the client clearly understands the plan before construction starts.

What it's like to start

You don't need finished ideas, sketches, or a clear plan before reaching out. Most clients contact me when they have a site, a rough goal, and a lot of questions. An initial conversation helps you understand what the project could realistically involve, what decisions come next, and whether moving forward makes sense — before committing to full design services.
